The Warrington heats of the MQL MIMIR competition were held on Wednesday 15 February 2012.
Congratulations go to Allan Hoy on winning the Individual Competition, and to the three Runners-up, Derek Moody, Roy Smith and Colin Foster.
Congratulations also go to David Smith on winning the Individual Supporters’ Plate.
Thank you to all who competed, to all of those who assisted, by asking questions, scoring, or simply supporting. Special thanks go to Angela Houghton and Val Gannon for organising the night.

The next WQL Council Meeting of the season will be at St Stephen's at 8:00pm on Sunday 15th April 2012, all welcome. If you have anything to be discussed at Council then please let Cliff Houghton or Derek Moody know.
The Warrington AGM will be held on Sunday 20 May 2012 at St Stephen's. Any proposals for the AGM must be submitted at least two weeks beforehand.

It is with great sadness that we have to report the death of Joan Mercer - a long-standing member of the Alford Academicals team. Joan had been ill for some time and had been unable to play in quizzes. I am sure that we all mourn her death and send our condolences to her family.

Victoria Coren presents the 6th series of the popular BBC Four quiz show Only Connect where, as in life itself, knowledge will only take you so far: patience and lateral thinking are also vital. It’s all about making connections between things which may appear, at first glance, not to be connected at all.
We’re looking for teams of three players who share a common passion, ability or profession, to pool their combined wits to solve fiendish conundrums and vexing puzzles. Applications must be received by 31st January 2012.
Only Connect is produced for the BBC by Presentable Ltd.

All applicants must be 18 years of age and over on the 31st January 2012.
All applicants must be resident in the UK or Channel Islands.

Congratulations to Wayne Kelly, a regular player for Alford Academicals, on his success in clinching the National Scrabble Championship title and picking up a £2,000 prize. Wayne was crowned after a tense best-of-five showdown recently in London. The victory was all the sweeter for Wayne who has had a string of near-misses including finishing as runner-up on TV’s Countdown series 28, being one game away from qualifying for the 2011 World Scrabble Championships, and coming third in the 2011 Association of British Scrabble Players Masters title.
